Ep. 49: Multi-family Risk versus Single-family Risk, with Rodney Thompson

Play episode

Lance is the Founder and Managing Partner of Verivest, an end-to-end real estate investment platform designed to bring transparency and trust to middle-market investing, and a Principal in Fairway America, a real estate private equity firm in Portland, Oregon.

Rodney Thompson of Solaris Capital is a multi-family syndicator based in Minneapolis. He made the transition from single-family years ago, lured by multi-family’s scalability and — as he sees it — lower risk profile. He and Lance discuss Rodney’s approach to analyzing markets in the Midwest and Southeast, the characteristics he looks for in properties, and the importance of having conviction.

This Week’s Guest

Working in IT for 36 years and management for the last 20 years has given Rodney a broad knowledge of customer relations and project management. Returning to school in 2015, Rodney graduated from DeVry University with a degree in Business Management.

Starting out investing in single-family homes, Rodney quickly discovered that scaling the single-family business model had its challenges. Commercial real estate offers so much more for the investor. With the economy of scales on your side, and the fact commercial property is valued in a dramatically different way, moving his focus to commercial real estate was the only smart thing to do.

By partnering with other industry experts, Solaris Equity Partners can successfully create wealth for our investors.
